How to improve your listening skills?

When attending university in France, I knew a British girl, fluent in French, but didn't know how to pronounce the French letter "u". It took me one afternoon to teach her how to pronounce correctly the letter "u". For those who don't know French, our "u" is seems to be difficult for foreigners to pronounce ... foreigners tend to pronounce like "you" ou "ou".

My friend is not the only I met with this issue. When I taught my 3 years old son the letter, he was able to duplicate in one shot. Neuroscientists say that most adults have trouble distinguishing sounds.

Having good listening skills is necessary to learn a new language. You have to learn and reproduce new sounds that you don't familiar with and in order to do it correctly you need to learn how to listen, how to acquire good listening skills and how to improve them.

There are people who can't sing because they don't have musical ears and don't have the ability to reproduce what they ear ... it's the same when learning a foreign language, there are people who can't reproduce the actual words because their listening skills are weak. The solution for both cases it's to work, exercise the ears to acquire and develop listening skills.

Some tips:

1) Be physically and mentally prepared to listen to the native of your target language. In general, most people don't listen in a conversation, some of them are preparing what they are going to say next or think about something else if the conversation is boring. Listening is a skill, it's something that you learn. You can hear that doesn't mean that you can listen.

2) Listen carefully to TV, DVDs, Radio in your target language. In order to not be distracted, don't put the subtitles in your native language. This is available when you work on your listening skills. Because when you put the subtitles when you watch a DVD, your mind will be focused on the reading and not on the listening.

3) Exercise your ears to different accents in your native language. If I go to some regions in France, people may not understand when I speak because even if I speak the same language, since I have a different accent than theirs, some people won't understand me because their ears are not trained to different accents. It happened to me.

When I came to America, I was familiar with the Carribbean accent and the British accent ... the American accent was a barrier for me to fully understand what people were saying. I had to train my ears to different American accents by watching the news and focus on conversations.

Expose your ears to conversations and give your brain the time to process the new data. The brain will do most of the job for you.

4) If you decide to work on your listening skills during an interaction. Don't talk a lot but focus on listening.

Best way to improve spanish listening skills?
I have been watching a lot of spanish television. I have learned from textbook as well as from friends but for the most part text book. I am seventeen years old and I have been learning formal spanish since freshmen year, now in senior year I am much more fluent. I began to watch spanish telenovelas and t.v in general when I was 16 and now at 17 I am starting to decipher the words. At first, it was learning and getting used to the phrases and words but now it seems like the picture is becoming..clearer..know what I mean? It is kind of like I was wearing glasses at first andmy vision was blurred and now the picture in front of me is becoming clearer. I want to know if there are any other ways of improving my spanish listening skills. I am fluent in writing, reading, and speaking.

Help! Tips to improve my English Listening Skills...?
Hi there Oh people I really feel disappointed in myself..My english is pretty awful, this makes me feel down and like I want to give up, I'm completely aware of the importance of this language therefore I practise on a dayli basis, learn lots of vocabulary and stuff..BUT, whenever I'm listening to a conversation I'm not able to distinguish the words I just learnt..it's very confusing, I started learning English since I was about 8 years old..but nothing serious up to one day I finally realised my English sucks and I got into will learning English to the point of becoming very fluent at it, it was about 6 months ago, now I'm 16. I don't know..perhaps I'm extremely strict with myself..anyway..please, tell me, what should I do to improve my listening skills? Another thing Do you think I'm doing wrong when I do not read definitions in English and prefer to translate directly into my native language? Thanks in advance.

Best Way to improve French Listening Skills?
I am a GCSE French student and I'm terrible at listening to and comprehending French in a short amount of time. I'm fairly good at written Frencha and I rarely make grammatical spelling mistakes on them but when it comes to speaking and listening to French, I feel like an idiot because I can't even make sense of elementary speech I often lose focus when listening either because I've given up listening to the conversation recorded conversation or because I'm trying to understand one clause whilst the next one is being spoken.I don't know what I can do which is why i'm asking you to help me, if you can. Basically, how can I improve my French listening skills and adapt to the French voice so I feel more confident around people who speak French fluently? I'm sure that if I listen to a lot of French I would be able to understand any French except where people use the subjunctive of unfamiliar vocab.
