Why has foreign language study become...?
Why has foreign language study become a low priority in the United States education system?Do you think that the US should make the same commitment to foreign language programs as many European countries have?If you'd have had a choice, would you have learned a foreign language at a young age?Just wondering I think the US should realize the importance of foreign language programs and begin to teach children the importance of diversity and communication skills at a young age.I agree with everyone's answers so far. I'm in an Intro to Education class in college. I realize that not only foreign language programs are starting to diminish, but so are others, like art and music.

Help! Getting discouraged with Japanese language study...?
I've been studying Japanese for many years, nowhere near fluent. I can introduce myself, talk about what I like, simple things like that but no further. I have a tutor but I get overwhelmed when studying the chapters. I really wanna go to advance level but it's so much STUFF. Going to Japan is not an option now. I recently me met someone from Japan, her English was so good I was getting jealous. I don't mind kanji, I think it's fun but speaking real sentences and reading is difficult. I've been studying German on my own for about 3 months I have a tutor now to correct my pronunciation I say half the words wrong . But I am learning really fast, I devour my chapters. I don't even try hard except for pronouncing stuff. I know grammar and some words are like English, but even unrelated stuff I pick up fast.I study German with a carefree attitude. I tried that with Japanese and it don't really work. Do I need a break from Japanese? Am I trying too hard?

What's your language study routine?
I have always been interested in learning languages. In fact, a quote defines what it is that compels me most " The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." Ludwig WittgensteinHere's my question to you What is your study routine? Do you study daily? If so, how long? Do you use flash cards, a notebook, or merely repeat the words over again? Do you use a recorder, video, or anything that is unique to standard study practices? I myself study with flashcards, a dictionary, various language study books in my case, I study Arabic , and I have started blogging. Blogging is my most recent addition I take articles written in Arabic from the BBC Arabic and various Arabic newspapers then translate them into English. Just by writing this question, I've decided to start recording videos of myself to increase my confidence and auditory capabilities. Share your routine, you may stumble upon something new.

How many years of college language study would be considered a "reading ability"?
A grad school I am interested in requires a " reading ability" in three languages in addition to your native language. How many years of undergraduate study would that be? I have 2 years German and 1 year of Latin and French.

Which is the best language study guide for Farsi/modern Persian?
Hi. Am looking to learn Farsi modern Persian. I know there are lots of series to choose from Teach Yourself, Hugo etc. Just wondering if anyone can make a good recommendation based on personal experience?I should mention that I am an absolute beginner and speak no other related languages. Also, I have a very strong preference for grammar focused learning, as opposed to the more 'jump right in to conversation' approach.Am leaning towards the 'Teach Yourself' series, simply because it's so well established. But if someone has had an amazing experience with another series, well...Thanks for any responses.Omar
