Don't attempt to acquire languages proficiency in school environments. I gave my testimony earlier. I was taught English since I was 12, Spanish since I was 14, German since I was 15, Portuguese since I was 16, I studied Italian for 4 years ... After high-school I was unable to have a regular conversation with the native speakers of these languages.
When I was studying in France, I was in the Spanish Department since my major was Spanish ... all the courses were in Spanish except for a French literature course ... we were absolutely immersed. I improved so fast! because the teachers (most of them were native Spanish) taught, spoke to us like this we were in a Spanish spoken country. Sometimes I forgot that I was French ... I became more and more spontaneous when talking the language. The reason was because the setting were different, no baby-talk from the teachers, no boring methods ... just normal conversations, normal interaction. I believe that interaction increases a lot our learning abilities. If you are looking for methods (tapes, CDs, DVDs etc.), try to find interactive methods of learning otherwise you will be bored and you will give up before the end.
